Beyond the fringe at Bishopsgate

Bishopsgate Goodsyard, Bishopsgate, London

Developers Hammerson and Ballymore are finalising plans for The Goodsyard, the mixed-use regeneration of Bishopsgate Goodsyard, central London’s largest and last remaining undeveloped sites, bridging between Hackney and Tower Hamlets, Shoreditch, Banglatown and the City of London. The huge site has been derelict since 1964.

HAL is designing six of the proposed stand-alone residential buildings on the north side of the scheme that will overlook the raised central park to the south, and Sclater Street to the north.

The blocks are sandwiched between the ‘box’ of Shoreditch overground station and the listed perimeter wall of the goodsyard, overlooking the new Middle Road which runs like a cutting between two sets of existing goodsyard arches.

Each building will have direct access to the new park set above the arches, seven metres above street level.

The site’s long, thin shape creates some difficulties in organising efficient vertical circulation within the six buildings. The scheme will include both private-for-sale and affordable apartments, some of which will reference ‘loft-living’.
