The site was sandwiched between existing elements of the BEC campus (which remained open during the build) and the city’s Green Belt. The school is arranged over two floors in a crescent of buildings along on internal street book-ended by a sports hall and assembly building.
Classroom groupings, or ‘houses’ are located on the quieter side of the site. Year groups have their own identity in these five house blocks, while the Sixth Form, Business Centre and Special Needs Unit, all have their own discrete entrances.
Priority in the modest £130 per sq ft budget was given to providing as much natural light as possible and optimising environmental objectives with almost complete natural ventilation, a bio-mass boiler and rainwater harvesting system.
The scheme was undertaken at FLACQ, in collaboration with Wilkinson Eyre Architects.
